One of the things I love about writing science fiction is that I never know what I’m going to end up learning from one day to another. Recently, I had cause to research how an energy barrier or shield might theoretically work. What I found, shocked me; plasma shielding technology may now be closer to reality than fiction.
There are teams across the world experimenting with shielding technology. Much of their research reveals that a plasma barriers held in place by magnetic fields is the future of shielding technology. Here are just a couple of tidbits you may find interesting.
- A prototype Plasma Acoustic Shield System (PASS) has been developed for US military use.
- In 2015. Boeing received a patent for a type of plasma shielding technology that would protect a target from shockwaves (not direct impacts).
- The European Space Radiation Superconducting Shield (SR2S) project is has been working on creating a magnetic force field that would limit the amount of radiation exposure astronauts experience outside Earth’s atmosphere.
What interesting science have you read about recently?
